The National Weather Service is hiring Meteorologists across the Eastern US to serve as Operational Forecasters at multiple offices. In this role, you'll produce impact-based weather, water, and climate hazard warnings and forecasts that directly protect public safety, while providing specialized decision support services to emergency management and public safety partners. This is a developmental position with a clear career path from GS-05 to GS-12 full performance level.
Job Description
The National Weather Service has launched a major nationwide hiring initiative filling positions at the majority of NWS offices across the country through pooled vacancy announcement groups. This Eastern US pool covers offices in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin. As a Meteorologist you will integrate forecast weather, water, and climate hazards with associated societal risks to produce and communicate life-saving impact-based warnings, advisories, outlooks, and general forecasts. You will provide Impact Based Decision Support Services (IDSS) including tailored products, specialized notifications, remote briefings, and on-site deployments to core partners in public safety. Collect, assess, analyze, and integrate environmental data to forecast critical elements at global, synoptic, and meso-scales. Developmental GS-05/07/09 leading to Full Performance Level GS-12. Rotating shift work required, 24/7 operations. Positions at multiple WFO/NCEP locations. Direct Hire Authority. Low Risk Security Clearance required.
