Job Description
NOAA National Weather Service Meteorologist — Direct Hire Authority. Open to the public and career-transition candidates.
Duties (GS-09 level, developmental to GS-12):
- Forecast weather, water, and climate hazards; produce and communicate life-saving impact-based warnings, advisories, outlooks, and general forecasts
- Provide Impact Based Decision Support Services (IDSS): tailored products, specialized notifications, remote briefings, and/or on-site deployments to core partners in public safety
- Collect, assess, analyze, and integrate environmental data to forecast at global, synoptic, and mesoscale levels
- Collaborate with WFO/NCEP colleagues to improve operational functions
Conditions: Rotating shift work required; 24/7 operations. Office setting. Low Risk Security Clearance required. PCS relocation not authorized.
Duty stations include: Norton MA, College Park MD, Caribou ME, Gray ME, Gaylord MI, and 40+ other WFO offices across the Eastern and Central US.
Qualification: Degree in meteorology/atmosphere science with 24+ semester hours including atmospheric dynamics, synoptic/mesoscale analysis, physical meteorology, and remote sensing; plus physics and differential equations. Specialized experience at GS-11 level required for GS-12 target.
