Overview
This is a mid-level operational forecaster position with the National Park Service under the Department of the Interior, focused on wildland fire meteorology and weather forecasting to support federal fire management decisions. The role involves producing fire weather products, managing data networks, and coordinating with multiple federal agencies across five regional duty stations (Massachusetts, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska).
Job Description
This position is with the Department of the Interior, Office of the Secretary, exercising oversight of the wildland fire management program across multiple federal agencies. Duty station options include Hadley, MA; Indianapolis, IN; Minneapolis, MN; Kansas City, MO; and Omaha, NE.
Basic Requirement: Degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or related natural science with 24+ semester hours in meteorology including atmospheric dynamics, synoptic/mesoscale analysis, physical meteorology, and remote sensing instrumentation; plus physics with lab, differential equations, and 9+ semester hours in related physical sciences.
GS-12 level: One year of specialized experience producing and delivering meteorological products and briefings for fire management decision-making; overseeing fire weather data networks; interagency coordination during high-impact weather events; applying advanced meteorological techniques for fire weather assessment and delivering actionable intelligence.
GS-13 level: Expert-level experience managing interagency fire weather networks; providing consultation on fire weather systems and Predictive Services operations; conducting operational forecasting for fire weather and climatological products; leading technology transfer and applied research partnerships.
