Job Description
The Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO) seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to improve high-resolution fire weather warning guidance using the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) Warn-on-Forecast System (WoFS). Located in the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma, this role is part of the Severe Convective Probabilities and Impacts (SCPI) team.
Key duties include developing capabilities for predicting wildland fire spread using WoFS, generating objective verification metrics for forecasts of wildfire spread using radar and satellite observations, contributing to a multi-disciplinary team working toward improved public warning capabilities, and leading/co-authoring scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.
Tasks may include participation in real-time forecasting activities and data collection associated with prescribed burns.
Qualifications: PhD in Meteorology or a STEM field relevant to the position; demonstrated experience in numerical weather prediction, fire spread modeling, remote sensing, wildfire fuels, and/or fire weather forecasting; experience developing scientific or data-analysis software.
