Overview
CIWRO at the University of Oklahoma is seeking a Research Scientist or Associate to advance precipitation estimation science using AI and machine learning within the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system. This role involves developing algorithms to improve quantitative precipitation estimations by integrating data from radars, satellites, and forecast models in collaboration with NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory.
Job Description
CIWRO at the University of Oklahoma seeks a Research Associate (M.S.) or Research Scientist (Ph.D.) to advance precipitation estimation science within the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system through AI and machine learning. MRMS integrates data streams from multiple radars, surface and upper air observations, lightning detection systems, satellite observations, and forecast models. Collaborative work with NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL).
Job Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and test AI/ML algorithms to improve coverage and accuracy of quantitative precipitation estimations (QPEs) across all MRMS domains
- Support and update MRMS system codes and techniques
- Work with interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to design, develop, and implement QPE-based enhancements
- Present research at meetings and professional conferences
Required: Ph.D. (Research Scientist) or M.S. (Research Associate) in STEM field related to position. Strong knowledge of AI/ML. Proficiency in high-level programming languages. Preferred: C++, Perl, Python; Linux environment; AWS or Cloud computing.
Preferred: Expertise in precipitation estimation, atmospheric processes/variables, and/or radar data/variables. Application deadline: October 8, 2026.
