Overview
CIWRO at the University of Oklahoma seeks a Research Scientist or Associate to advance precipitation estimation science by developing and implementing AI/ML algorithms within the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory on cutting-edge research that integrates data from multiple sources to improve quantitative precipitation estimations across diverse meteorological domains.
Job Description
The Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO) at the University of Oklahoma is seeking a Research Associate or Research Scientist to advance precipitation estimation science within the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system through AI and machine learning.
The MRMS system integrates data streams from multiple radars, surface and upper-air observations, lightning detection, satellite observations, and forecast models. This collaboration with NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) focuses on developing and testing AI/ML techniques to improve quantitative precipitation estimations (QPEs) across all MRMS domains.
Key responsibilities: design and implement AI/ML algorithms for QPE improvement; support and update MRMS system codes; collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers; present research at conferences and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
Qualifications: PhD (Research Scientist) or M.S. (Research Associate) in a STEM field; strong knowledge of AI/ML; proficiency in Python, C++, or Perl; experience with Linux environments; AWS a plus. Preferred: expertise in precipitation estimation, atmospheric processes, or radar data variables.
Application deadline: October 8.
